What is AI share of voice?

AI share of voice is the percentage of AI answer-engine citations for a set of keywords that point to your domain versus competitors. Where traditional share of voice measured ad spend or search ranking presence, AI share of voice measures how often engines like Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT surface or cite you when answering the questions you care about.

How do you measure it?

You pick a keyword set, query multiple AI engines for each keyword, and count how often each domain is cited, then express each domain's mentions as a share of the total. The honest caveat: engines differ in how observable they are. Some (like Perplexity) can be measured fairly directly, while others are estimated using a search proxy — a credible report labels which signals are measured and which are estimated.

Is share of voice the same as traffic?

No. Share of voice measures citation and visibility share for a keyword set, not clicks, sessions or revenue. It's a leading competitive signal that helps you prioritize, but it shouldn't be reported as a traffic or sales number.
